Day 05 of Class - 9 February 2009

Today we looked at some artists that create art using found/everyday/easily accessible materials (because we all know how well equipped elementary classrooms are with art supplies..not!), but here we saw that you can be creative and create some really beautiful things using simple things like paper and a pair of scissors. We looked at artists Alexander Calder (mobiles) and Peter Callesen (paper cut-outs). Then we all made some great stuff in our open studio time using paper, wire, clue, and scissors (we made pop-ups, wire sculptures, puppets, paper sculptures, etc). (so really there's no excuse to not do art and it can so easily be incorporated into teaching core subjects..and possibly an even more effective and definitely more fun way!) So keep these ideas in your 'textbooks' and/or binder and keep adding to it..there's a lot of great ideas out there. Then we learned about the INSTITUTIONALIST THEORY and the believe that art is only art if it's in an institution (like a major art museum) and we made our own reliquaries using home-made play-dough and a shoe box that commemorates an special event (great idea for an alternate book report or history lesson perhaps)...and I thought they were pretty darn artistic (even though they haven't been displayed in a BIG museum...yet;)
